She also authored a new publication, Gettysburg Surgeons: Facing a Common Enemy in the Civil War’s Deadliest Battle, which will be published July 1, 2025, by Stackpole Books. It tells the story of more than 1200 military and civilian surgeons, North and South, who worked to save lives under fire and in the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg. Based on a decade of research compiled in a database, the book is dedicated to the medical staff of all wars, who have fought a common enemy of death and disease.Special Issue: Pennsylvania’s Revolutions, Guest edited by Paul Douglas Newman, University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. Publication Date: July 2026 (93.3) The Guest Editor seeks proposals of scholarly articles (25–35 pages, double spaced) featuring contemporary research that engages diverse themes within the subject of the American Revolution in Pennsylvania, 1750–1800. Articles placing Pennsylvania within the larger national and international context are welcome. Additionally, vignettes (between 1,000 and 1,550 words) that showcase a particular artifact, document, or research collection are welcome. Museum exhibition reviews, public history, etc., relating to the Revolution in Pennsylvania will also be considered. Potential authors should consult the Guest Editor as soon as possible to discuss their topic, who can be contacted at: [email protected]. Additional questions relating to this or any other issues of Pennsylvania History can be directed to Linda A. Ries, Editor, at [email protected]. The Centre County Historical Society has created an online exhibition on archeological excavations at the Valentine Ore Washing Plant, conducted in 2009 and 2010 by Heberling Associates, Inc. They unearthed the foundations of the plant, which operated from 1887 to 1898. Also found were pieces of machinery and the tools used by the men who worked there. The website can be accessed here: https://centrehistory.org/building-on-the-past. The Pennsylvania Historical Association extends its gratitude and appreciation to David Carmicheal, who retired as State Archivist in September. Carmicheal shepherded the design and construction of the new State Archives building, making sure that the facility addressed the needs of researchers, staff, and its permanent residents—the vast and irreplaceable records of Pennsylvania’s history. Those of you who attended his presentation on the new Archives at the 2023 PHA conference saw firsthand his commitment to both preservation and accessibility, the two bedrock principles of archives. We are also grateful for Carmicheal’s support of our Scholars in Residence program, which was reestablished in 2015. The PHA is looking forward to working with his successor, David Shoff, who was appointed State Archivist in December 2024. Shoff brings extensive experience and knowledge of Pennsylvania records to the position, having served as Chief of the Archives Division since 2010.
