Optimizing Telemetry Range in Obstructed Environment Using Relay Systems for Multi-Drone
The telemetry system provides a means of communication between the drone and the ground control station (GCS) through various sensors, transmitters and receivers and other storage devices. Telemetry systems also play an important role in the analysis and decision-making process for both manually and automatically installed control systems. Telemetry communication coverage can be affected by environmental conditions in the form of physical obstructions, radio signal attenuation and other wireless media interference. Stability with good radio signal quality is needed to be able to send and receive data so that route planning, monitoring and control can run well. The research was conducted by comparing the stability of the system to send and receive data against the distance between the rover and GCS with a relay attached to the copter as master node. Telemetry modules utilize RFD900x with multipoint firmware installed. Test results with telemetry relays improved radio coverage by more than 90% in environmental conditions where there was no free view between the GCS and the rover. The use of multi-drones and GCS is expected to be a solution to overcome telemetry coverage problems in physically obstructed locations.
