Integrating Metadata with Convolutional Neural Networks for Enhanced Media Authenticity Verification
In recent years, the digital manipulation of media has become increasingly sophisticated and widespread, blurring the line between authentic and AI-generated content. This study delves into image authenticity verification using AI, focusing on integrating image metadata to enhance detection capabilities. By augmenting traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with additional contextual information from metadata, we aim to improve the accuracy and robustness of authenticity verification models. Using the CIFAKE dataset, which comprises 60,000 synthetically generated images and 60,000 real images, we developed and tested a modified CNN architecture incorporating image data and metadata as well as comparing its performance with an identical non-metadata CNN architecture. The enhanced model achieved a validation accuracy of 93.16%, a validation precision of 93.29%, and a validation recall of 92.67%, outperforming the traditional CNN model. Our findings highlight the potential of metadata as a valuable asset in image authentication tasks and suggest practical applications in fields such as journalism, law enforcement, and social media platforms. Future studies should explore more diverse datasets and advanced metadata features to enhance detection capabilities further. This study offers valuable insights into the intersection of AI and authenticity verification, contributing to efforts at maintaining the integrity of digital media in an era of increasingly sophisticated AI-generated content.
