Educational Games with the Theme of Improving English Language Skills

This study will discuss the design application-based educational games with the theme to improve English language skills. Education First (EF) has just released its 2021 English Proficiency Index report for Southeast Asian countries. EF categorizes English proficiency into five levels: Very High (above 600), High (550 – 599), Moderate (500 – 549), Low (450 – 499), and Very Low (<450) (Reza Pahlevi, 2021). Singapore has been named the country with a very high level of proficiency in Southeast Asia, with an English proficiency index of 635. Next are the Philippines and Malaysia, which have high English proficiency scores of 592 and 562, respectively. Vietnam follows in fourth place with an English proficiency index score of 486. Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks fifth with a score of 466, categorized as low. We are using Agile development approach, specifically the Kanban method with five main stages in the development process: analysis, game design, system design, data collection methods, and game evaluation. The aim of this research is to design a game-based application that can effectively improve the English language skills of Indonesian people. Evaluation is carried out through Usability Testing to assess the level of user satisfaction and involvement with the game being developed. The results of this research show that the use of application-based educational games can be an effective solution in improving the English language skills of Indonesian people. Therefore, the application can be an effective alternative in improving English language skills for users in Indonesia
