Role of Biologics in Asthma
Abstract Severe Asthma is a subset of Asthma which continues to be a clinical challenge for not only the patient but also for the treating Asthma expert. The struggle starts from diagnosing the patients with the severe form of Asthma and continues with enormous difficulties in devising and maintaining an appropriate treatment regimen for the patient. Currently, all efforts focus to design a treatment strategy sparing the usage of systemic steroids and thereby avoiding its deleterious side effects. Fortunately, with the advent of Biologics in Asthma management, clinicians have more to offer to severe asthma patients. The emphasis on tailor made therapy is utmost important where the understanding of phenotype and endotype of Asthma are unwaveringly important. There are various options available with noteworthy clinical data to prove their clinical benefits in terms of reduction in dose of steroids, reduction in annual asthma exacerbation rate, quality of life and improved symptom scores. The choice of biologic depends upon the inflammatory pathway driving the cascade of events in individual patients along with multiple other factors like frequency of dosing, route of administration, financial implication, other accompanying comorbid states and history of any biologic agent taken in the past etc.
