Performance Evaluation of Variable Reluctance Linear Resolver Based on the Hybrid Model Across a Wide Velocity Range

In closed-loop control of linear motors, measuring the position of the moving part is necessary. Linear resolvers are a suitable option for position measurement in harsh and polluted environments. Despite their many advantages, resolvers face a reduction in accuracy in high-speed applications. This issue arises due to the increased impact of longitudinal end effects and the non-negligible motional voltage at high speeds. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a linear Variable Reluctance (VR) resolver with hybrid excitation. In addition, an accurate and efficient modeling tool is essential to evaluate the sensor's performance across various velocities. Therefore, an analytical model based on the hybrid method is proposed in this paper. The developed model achieves position and speed measurement with a maximum position error of 7%, saving 89.75% of the time compared to Finite Element Method (FEM). The results obtained from the hybrid model are validated against FEM outcomes and experimental measurements from the prototype sensor.
