Religion in a Secular and Pluralistic World: Believing in the 21st Century
Abstract This article examines the evolving role of religion in contemporary society, arguing that rather than declining, religion is undergoing a transformation in response to globalization, pluralism, and shifting ideological landscapes. The introduction contextualizes this shift, outlining key cultural and social factors. The first section explores secularization and religious pluralism, highlighting how these forces reshape religious engagement. The second section investigates the transformation of religious identity, emphasizing how faith traditions navigate diversity while maintaining core values. The final section discusses Christianity’s evolving role, shifting from an authoritative source of answers to a dialogical faith that fosters inquiry. The paper’s novelty lies in reframing religion’s trajectory – not as disappearance but as metamorphosis – underscoring its continued relevance in a rapidly changing world.
