Effects of Socheongryong-tang on Blood Glucose Levels in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Undergoing Standard Treatment: A Retrospective Study

Objective: This study retrospectively investigated the effects of the Korean medicine Socheongryong-tang (小青龍湯) on blood glucose levels and its overall safety for patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: The clinical records of 41 patients (age≥19 years) who continuously consumed Socheongryong-tang (min. 3 packs per day) were reviewed. Socheongryong-tang’s effects on the patients’ fasting (FBS) and 2-hour postprandial (PP2) blood glucose were assessed by comparing the average measurements taken before and after treatment. To evaluate the medicine’s [.2] safety, liver and kidney function test results were also compared. Results: The average duration of Socheongryong-tang consumption was 5.07±5.42 days. Although FBS and PP2 decreased, these changes were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Safety assessments showed no significant impacts on liver function (p>0.05), though there was a significant increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (p=0.0452).Conclusions: Socheongryong-tang is safe for use in patients with type 2 diabetes and does not significantly affect blood glucose.
