Operating Characteristics of an Automotive Adjustable-Field Permanent Magnet Motors with 3D Magnetic Paths and Asymmetric Magnet Arrangement

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes a three-dimensional structure of an adjustable field magnetization permanent magnet (PM) motor and a high-power density rotor structure with asymmetric permanent magnet arrangement for both high torque and high efficiency operation in the high speed and low torque range. 3D-FEA has confirmed that it is possible to achieve both high torque density and adjustable field magnetization. Load testing using the prototype proposed motor confirmed that high motor efficiency can be achieved even during high-speed operation.</div></div>
