Extraction of polyphenols using TBP/1-octanol/mixed diluent in reactive system via flat sheet supported liquid membrane process

Abstract. Agricultural wastewaters are attractive sources in order to recover precious bioactive compounds particularly polyphenols. These compounds offer multiple advantages toward human health and are popular in several industries branches such as pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic owing to their strong antioxidant properties. In this current study, flat sheet supported liquid membrane (FSSLM) was used to recover polyphenols from the simulated wastewater. Even though this process offers high selectivity and simple process, the application of FSSLM process is still limited in the industries because of the rapid membrane loss and short lifetime process. Therefore, this study exposed the feasibility of FSSLM process containing a mixture of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and 1-Octanol as a synergistic carrier, diluents constituting of kerosene, corn oil, sunflower and palm oil and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a stripping agent. Several parameters that commonly influence the extraction process were manipulated including feed and stripping phase flow rate, carrier concentration, and feed initial concentration. The results show that 60.13% of extraction with 32.25% of polyphenols recovery were achieved at the favorable condition of 1:1 ratio of palm oil: sunflower as a diluent, 100 mL/min feed phase flow rate, 100 mL/min stripping phase flow rate, 1M of TBP, 1M of 1-Octanol and initial concentration of polyphenols at 300 ppm.
