The return of Phanagoras?
The article deals with the name of Phanagoria. Recently, N.V. Zavoykina and A.A. Za voykin gave some new arguments in favor of the view that the city was named after its found er Phanagoras of Teos. They cited, first, an early Phanagorian graffito with ΦΑΝΑΓΡ in the f irst line, which is interpreted as the name of Phanagoras; and, second, a stamp on a fragment of an oenochoe from Patraeus showing a bearded male head, which is considered to be a ‘por trait’ of Phanagoras. Here the author demonstrates that the arguments of above-mentioned scholars have serious weaknesses and cannot be recognized compulsory. On the other hand, now we have at least one reliable example (Arist. fr. 514 Rose) of an Archaic colony (Kios) named after its founder.
