Longitudinal MRI Assessment of Brain Changes in Parkinson’s Disease

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is clinically heterogeneous, with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) playing a key role in subtyping forms of the disease. Proposed models of progression do not take all variations into account. We investigated the spatiotemporal brain changes in regions of interest (ROIs) associated with Braak stages of PD including brainstem, basal ganglia, thalamus and medial temporal lobe regions using MRI biomarkers and multivariate modelling to classify different disease trajectories

Abstract

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is clinically heterogeneous, with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) playing a key role in subtyping forms of the disease. Proposed models of progression do not take all variations into account. We investigated the spatiotemporal brain changes in regions of interest (ROIs) associated with Braak stages of PD including brainstem, basal ganglia, thalamus and medial temporal lobe regions using MRI biomarkers and multivariate modelling to classify different disease trajectories
