A Comparative Design of SPMSM and Inset PMSM Based on the Analytical Technique and FEM
The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is extensively utilized in Electric Vehicles (EVs) and electrical drives because of its exceptional power density, lightweight construction, impressive efficiency, and minimal torque inertia. Based on the Permanent Magnet (PM) position in the rotor of PMSM, the PMSM can be classified into two categories: Surface-Mounted PMSM (SPMSM) and inset PMSM. The contribution of this paper is to present a comparative design of two these motors with inner rotor configuration via a combination between the analytical approach and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The idea is performed in two steps. Initially, an analytical design is developed to determine the required dimensions of the motors. Then, based on the analytical parameters, the FEM is presented to simulate electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed motor, such as magnetic fields, electromagnetic torque, cogging torque, torque ripple and back electromotive force.
