The Polemic of the Boycott Movement Against Products Affiliated With Israel in Indonesia

The boycott movement against products affiliated with Israel has sparked public polemics as a response to the violence experienced by Palestine and resulted in numerous casualties, particularly among Muslims. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has also voiced support for this movement. However, not all parties agree. Some endorse it as a form of solidarity with Palestine while others deem the boycott as ineffective and potentially harmful to Indonesia’s economy. This research aims to identify the factors causing the polemics as well as the implications of the boycott movement, including its impact on the community’s economy. The research method employed is a literature review, utilizing data gathered from relevant documents across various online media sources. The findings indicate a profound divergence of opinions regarding the boycott, with proponents viewing it as an expression of concern and a struggle against Israeli oppression whereas opponents express worries about long-term economic implications, including the possibility of layoffs. Furthermore, this study offers recommendations for addressing these polemics, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to supporting Palestine without neglecting the economic aspects and welfare of the local community.
