„NECESARA CARANTINĂ”. Reguli etică și medici în Bucovina (1780–1860)

The article highlights the quarantine in Bukovina as a structured and organized plague warning system at the eastern border of the Habsburg Monarchy. The arrangement of stations (larger or smaller) since the end of the 18th century within the permanent cordon on the military frontier proved to be a means of preventing the spread of terrible epidemics. According to the regulations throughout the empire, people, goods and animals had to be controlled, disinfected, and – in extreme conditions – isolated. The physicians and surgeons of the quarantines in Bukovina had to respect the structural and organizational rules of the system, implementing them as a means of sanitary prevention. The course of their career indicates that some wanted to access the status of Director of quarantines, a better-paid position that offered the opportunity to assert themselves at the local and regional level as representatives of a state responsible for the welfare and health of its subjects. Coming from distant territories, doctors (directors or not) assumed both the risks of the profession and the isolation in spaces that some historians of medicine called “strangers”.
