Enhancing Antibacterial and Mechanical Properties of Polylactic Acid Fibers Through Trace Coordination Bonding With Nano‐<scp>Cu2O</scp> for Sustainable Public Textiles

ABSTRACT Public Textiles require high durability and safety, yet common materials like cotton, linen, silk, and wool are prone to harboring pathogens and experiencing mechanical deterioration due to microbial activity. Developing fibers with exceptional antimicrobial and mechanical properties for Public Textiles is crucial but challenging. Herein, a trace coordination bond crosslinking strategy was proposed to prepare nano‐Cu 2 O/polylactic acid (Cu 2 O/PLA) fibers with highly antibacterial activity, mechanical robustness, and recyclability. The dynamic coordination bonds allow uniform dispersion of nano‐Cu 2 O in PLA, improving molecular chain interfaces and resulting in excellent mechanical performance (tensile fracture strength of 48.75 MPa). The combination of nano‐Cu 2 O's antimicrobial capacity and PLA's weak acidity provides superior antimicrobial activity (99.99%) against various pathogens. This high performance enables Cu 2 O/PLA fibers to demonstrate an exceptional shelf life exceeding 6 months. Additionally, the ease of breaking and regenerating coordination bonds grants Cu 2 O/PLA fibers high recyclability. Therefore, this trace coordination bond crosslinking strategy offers a novel and viable approach for preparing nanocomposite PLA fibers with excellent antimicrobial and mechanical properties, addressing the challenges faced in Public Textiles.
