Feminist, Christian, Secular?
Abstract This article explores the trajectory of Marie Denis, a Catholic activist and feminist, highlighting the complexity of identity and commitment that goes beyond simplistic stereotypes about the relationship between religion, feminism and secularism. Her journey reveals a subtle negotiation between her Catholic faith, feminist commitment and secularism. Her journey reflects a profound questioning of the patriarchal structures of the Church, while maintaining a personal connection to her faith. She navigates between the realms of religion and feminism. The article highlights the challenges faced by Catholic feminists as they grapple with the ‘cognitive dissonance’ between their religious identity and their feminist commitment. Marie Denis’s journey invites us to rethink how we conceptualise secularism.
