On October 23, 2024, the Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation held an International scientific and practical conference — II Scientific readings in memory of professor Mikhail N. Gernet, on the topic “Criminal policy and national priorities”.In 2024, the 150th anniversary of Mikhail Gernet birth is celebrated. This anniversary event provided an opportunity to revisit the creative legacy of Professor Gernet and, through the prism of the present, discuss the scientific results he obtained many years ago, which, as time has shown, laid the foundation for innovative and sought-after areas of criminal policy development. It should be noted that the comprehensive provision of national security, as well as its individual types, is legally recognized as one of the key national priorities of modern Russia. In this regard, criminal policy requires an effective impact on the sources of emerging threats to social and legal order, allowing to stop potentially dangerous consequences. During the conference, the participants conducted a scientific analysis of the directions of criminal policy in the framework of the implementation of national priorities, highlighted the most pressing issues of the development of criminal, criminal procedure and penal enforcement legislation. The article presents an overview of the reports at the plenary session — leading representatives of Russian and foreign legal science, heads of state authorities: T. Y. Khabrieva, I. M. Matskevich, M. Y. Barshchevsky, V. V. Fedorov, O. K. Zatelepin, etc. In addition, the main ideas expressed by the speakers and participants of the discussions held within the framework of the round tables of the Conference are reflected: “Criminal law regulation in the context of achieving national priorities”; “The purpose of criminal proceedings and national priorities”; “Penitentiary policy: from repression to re-socialization”; “Dynamics of the conceptual and categorical apparatus in international lawlegal order”; “Humanization of the criminal law in the works of Professor Mikhail Gernet”.
