Analyzing the Impact of Corruption on Champagne Imports: An Augmented Gravity Model Approach

This study examines the impact of income, distance, corruption, wine consumption, and population on champagne import volumes and average prices. Regression analyses, based on basic and augmented gravity models, reveal that income levels significantly drive champagne import volumes, reflecting its luxury nature. Geographical proximity also plays a notable role, capturing cultural similarities in wine consumption and reducing transportation costs. The findings highlight the significant influence of wine culture on import volumes and the role of corruption, with higher corruption levels associated with lower officially recorded import volumes and higher average prices. These results underscore the multifaceted factors shaping champagne trade dynamics, including the impact of corruption on underreporting and potential tax revenue losses. This research enhances the understanding of trade patterns and market behaviors, providing insights for strategic decision-making and policy interventions.
