Chrome-Siliconization of Iron and Carbon Steels by Halide-Activated Pack Cementation
Abstract Surface modification of metallic alloys can be targeted to achieve beneficial outcomes for high temperature service, e.g., corrosion and erosion resistance. The co-deposition of two different elements – chromium and silicon – was attempted in this study. The substrates were pure iron and two plain carbon steels with different carbon contents. The coatings were characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of substrate alloy composition on coating characteristics are discussed.
