Non-Intrusive Corrosion Monitoring Technology: SmartPIMS and MatPIMS

Metallic material corrosion is one of the main concerns across different industries, including oil and gas. Internal corrosion monitoring aids in providing better picture of the overall pipeline internal condition, allowing for proactive measures to be taken in time and avoiding catastrophic failures. Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is a leading company in the application of the new non-intrusive technologies (NIT) in corrosion monitoring field, testing, and evaluating the new technologies with the aim of processes digitalization and automations. This paper is presenting a case study of two (2) new NIT units’ installation, testing, and qualification, smartPIMS and matPIMS from Sensornetwork. Both units are using UT concept for corrosion monitoring. The first unit was installed in a 16” carbon steel steam header for high temperature application (expected maximum temperature of 120 °C). The second unit was installed in 12” oil pipeline. The readings from both units were compared to Automated Ultrasonic Inspection (AUT) and Manual Ultrasonic Inspection MUT readings with a difference of 0.1 mm only. During MUT calibration, a difference of 0.1 mm was detected, therefore, the initial results found acceptable.
