Study of Service Status and Failure Causes of Anti-Corrosion Coatings on Top Plate of Large Crude Oil Storage Tanks
Abstract In this paper, the service status of anti-corrosion coatings on the roof of large crude oil storage tanks in five crude oil reserves located in different regions of China were investigated. It was found that the anticorrosion coatings on the top of most storage tanks in these reserves have aged and peeled off in large areas from the top plates. The top plates or accessories on some tanks in reserves located in Qinzhou or Dalian have been corroded or experienced perforation due to coating failure. The high intensity ultraviolet radiation in the northwest region of China, as well as the high temperature, humidity, and sea salt concentration in coastal areas, especially in the south, are important reasons for coating failure. In addition, the mismatch between coating types and climate characteristics, as well as lax control of construction quality, are also significant reasons for coating failure. It is urgent to develop different anti-corrosion plans for tank roof plates based on the characteristics of different regions of China, in order to improve the service life of anti-corrosion coatings.
