An Open-Source Approach to High Voltage Induction Risk

Abstract Corrosion risk to buried pipelines from high-voltage induction is a well-known and extensively studied problem, typically addressed through standard electromagnetic analysis. Common approaches involve using calculus or finite element analysis to solve induced voltages and currents. While effective, these methods are challenging to scale beyond limited studies. In previous work, the authors developed a novel algorithm that leverages geospatial datasets to construct a digital twin of the pipeline environment and applies a simplified circuit-based method to estimate corrosion susceptibility. This work advances that approach by applying a more comprehensive algorithm using open-source tools such as SPICE to solve for induced voltages and currents.
