Interfacial Characterization of C1018 Using Ionic Liquids and Organic Imidazoline Compound

Abstract In the recent development of advanced chemicals used to influence the electrolyte/substrate interface; novel ILs have made subsequent progress in affecting the kinetics of the electrochemical reactions in a sustainable manner. In this research, the Imidazole-based IL [EMIM Ac] and conventional organic Imidazoline inhibitor were investigated for their effectiveness upon carbon steel alloy C1018 coupons in a 3.5 wt% NaCl environment. To study their corrosion behavior, electrochemical techniques were employed at a stationary state, maintaining 60°C with increasing inhibitor concentration, and surface morphology was analyzed with the help of SEM and EDAX characterization. The outcome from the potentiodynamic polarization test showed a gradual decrease in current densities as the concentration of IL increases. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) results corroborated increased charge transfer resistance (Rct) concerning increasing concentration, supporting higher corrosion resistance magnitudes, inhibitor efficiency also increases with increasing concentration of inhibitors. Furthermore, frequency dispersion in electrochemistry tests was observed for IL and organic Imidazoline inhibitor compounds since the substrate interface is coarse. Finally, surface characterization of the sample showed signs of pitting on the surface. The carbon steel coupon underwent uniform corrosion.
