Development of Corrosion Inhibitor Mixture - Engineering Principles
Abstract Corrosion is a destructive attack of a material that affects industry and in infrastructure. Water systems commonly use chemical treatment and corrosion inhibitors. Various conditions may increase corrosion rate in water systems such as the presence of corrosive impurities, water velocity, pH, and temperature that may lead to system repairs or upgrading the material of construction to expensive corrosion-resistant alloys. This work studies the engineering principles of selecting corrosion inhibitor components for carbon steel metal in the water systems, where the interactions among the main inhibitor components and additives are studied and optimized by using the factorial experimental design followed by the one-factor-at-a-time approach. Within specific concentrations, the inhibition effect of molybdate-nitrite corrosion inhibitor was improved by increasing the stability of the protective layer formed over the steel surface in ambient and high temperature environment. The proposed formula also inhibits Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) & Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC). A corrosion inhibition efficiency of 99.33% was delivered. Various combinations of the corrosion inhibitor components are introduced according to the required cost, environmental limitations, and corrosion inhibition.
