Comparison of Satellite and Conventional Networks Using Edge Computing for Monitoring System of IoT Base

In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) technology has rapidly advanced, particularly in healthcare, transportation, and agriculture applications. However, terrestrial networks have limited coverage in remote areas and are vulnerable to natural disasters. With its broader coverage, satellite technology offers solutions to these challenges but often faces communication latency issues. To address this, this paper discusses the application of satellite-based edge computing in IoT systems to enhance data processing efficiency and strengthen the system’s resilience and robustness. We compare the performance of satellite networks with conventional networks through tests involving 10, 50, and 100 users, using throughput and latency as critical indicators. The evaluation results show that while satellite networks have higher latency than conventional networks, edge computing significantly improves data transmission efficiency. The proposed system can enhance IoT performance in areas difficult for terrestrial networks to reach.
