Design and Development of RWMS: A Residential Wastewater Management System with Filtration and Water Quality Monitoring
This study presents the design and development of the Residential Wastewater Management System (RWMS), integrating filtration and real-time water quality monitoring to address pressing environmental and residential wastewater management challenges. With the growing need for sustainable water practices, this research aimed to provide an innovative solution that efficiently processes residential wastewater for non-potable uses while ensuring compliance with water quality standards. The RWMS incorporates advanced microcontrollers, such as Arduino UNO and ESP32, alongside sensors to monitor key water quality parameters, including turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and pH levels. A web-based dashboard enables real-time data visualization and system control, enhancing operational efficiency and user engagement. The system's filtration process employs a three-stage mechanism to remove solid particles, organic contaminants, and residual impurities, ensuring treated water is suitable for external applications like irrigation and cleaning. Testing demonstrated the RWMS's capability to improve water quality through effective filtration and automated monitoring, significantly reducing risks associated with untreated wastewater. Despite limitations, such as reliance on external power sources and monitoring of specific parameters, the RWMS contributes to environmental sustainability by promoting water conservation and aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6). Consequently, this research enrich existing discussion on sustainable water management offering specific recommendations on the use of wastewater treatment technologies in residential settings and their ability to address environmental concerns.
