A New Eccentricity Fault Diagnosis Method for IPMSM Using Variable Reluctance Resolver

Bearing faults, a major fault in interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs), can arise from eccentricity. Static eccentricity fault (SEF) mainly occurs due to incorrect manufacturing processes and mechanical impacts from external sources. However, existing fault diagnosis methods often suffer from reduced accuracy due to the attachment of additional sensors or external electrical noise. This paper proposes a new fault diagnosis method using a variable reluctance (VR) resolver to diagnose eccentricity faults (EF) in IPMSMs. Initially, the VR resolver used for fault diagnosis was modeled using a magnetic equivalent circuit. Subsequently, the characteristics of both the healthy and EF states of IPMSMs and VR resolvers were analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis method was verified through experiments.

Static eccentricity fault (SEF) mainly occurs due to incorrect manufacturing processes and mechanical impacts from external sources. However, existing fault diagnosis methods often suffer from reduced accuracy due to the attachment of additional sensors or external electrical noise. Subsequently, the characteristics of both the healthy and EF states of IPMSMs and VR resolvers were analyzed using the finite element method (FEM).
