In Memoriam
With great sadness, we note the untimely passing of GLQ's past coeditor Elizabeth Freeman. She was fifty-seven. Professor of English at the University of California at Davis at the time of her passing, she authored more than thirty scholarly articles and numerous books, including Beside You in Time: Sense Methods and Queer Sociabilities in the American Nineteenth Century (2019), which was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award; Time Binds: Queer Temporalities, Queer Histories (2010); The Wedding Complex: Forms of Belonging in Modern American Culture (2002); and coeditor (with Teagan Bradway) of Queer Kinship: Race, Sex, Belonging, Form (2022). She edited a special issue of GLQ, “Queer Temporalities” (2007), and coedited (with Ellen Samuels) a special issue of South Atlantic Quarterly, “Crip Temporalities” (2021). Like her essays, each of these books and edited collections innovated queer studies, often producing interdisciplinary conversations that remain central in the field.Beth, as she was known among peers, left a lasting impact on GLQ. A reviewer for the journal for many years, Beth's special double issue, “Queer Temporalities,” remains one of the journal's most-read issues. She went on to become the coeditor of GLQ from 2012–2017. During her tenure, Beth invigorated the journal, adding new editorial sections and furthering its interdisciplinary reach beyond the humanities. For anyone who had the fortune of working with her, Beth's humor and intellect remain indelible. We asked Jennifer DeVere Brody, who worked with Beth on GLQ, to contribute a personal reflection, which we are honored to share in this issue.
