Eco-friendly civil engineering practices for hydropower project development

Hydropower is a critical component of the global renewable energy portfolio. However, conventional hydropower development often involves significant environmental and social impacts. As global priorities shift toward sustainable infrastructure, eco-friendly civil engineering practices are emerging as vital tools to reduce the ecological footprint of hydropower projects. This paper critically examines sustainable design strategies, environmentally responsible construction methods, water and sediment management, and low-impact hydropower technologies. It also presents structured data on eco-friendly materials and analyzes their effectiveness. The integration of such practices not only minimizes harm to ecosystems but also enhances the socio-economic value and resilience of hydropower infrastructure. The study concludes that adopting a holistic, sustainability-oriented approach in civil engineering is essential for future hydropower development.
