Sustainability and Technological Innovations in Civil Construction

Objective: Analyze pathology related to reinforced concrete, with emphasis on carbonation, and discuss the use of sustainable technologies and innovative methods to prolong the lifespan of structures while reducing environmental impact. Theoretical Framework: Based on research carried out in the areas of carbonation in reinforced concrete, calculation of relative humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide and in the area of innovative technologies characterizing pollution, proposing algae as an alternative. Method:This is a quantitative study carried out on viaducts located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Data collection included both visual inspections and the use of specific equipment. Results and Discussion:Analyses were carried out on eight (8) viaducts located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A carbon dioxide meter was used, also measuring air temperature and humidity as part of the data collection procedure. Research Implications: The implications of this research include analyzing carbonation rates in a reinforced concrete viaduct after implementing algae-based biofiltration; evaluating the costs involved in implementing algae cultivation on viaducts; and investigating sustainable alternatives effective in reducing or preventing reinforcement corrosion in aggressive environments. The data presented in this research highlights the need for attention to this issue, contributing to further exploration and studies. Originality/Value:The originality lies in the implementation of biofiltration systems using algae, a highly promising proposal offering substantial benefits. These algae have the direct ability to capture CO2 from the atmosphere, contributing to the reduction of air pollution. In addition, during the photosynthesis process, algae release oxygen, thus improving air quality in the vicinity of viaducts. This approach represents an innovative and sustainable strategy to combat CO2 emissions and improve air quality in urban environments.
