THE SUFFIX +lI IN TURKISH SURNAMES USED IN LEBANON

As an inevitable result of communication between societies, the transition of language elements between the languages of those societies is observed. As the degree of communication increased, as it was between Turkish and Arabic for a period, the exchange of language elements also intensified. Although different studies have been conducted on the phrases, words, suffixes and grammar rules that passed from Turkish to various dialects of Arabic, it cannot be said that the subject has been examined in its entirety. In studies on the suffixes that passed from Turkish to other languages, it is seen that the suffixes +CI, +lI, +sIz and +lIk come to the fore. Among these suffixes that passed to other languages, the suffix +lI also draws attention with its unique features. In this study, 1.413 surnames that passed from Turkish to Lebanese Arabic were examined in terms of the suffix +lI and 161 surnames that took this suffix were identified. These surnames were examined both in terms of the forms in which they are seen and in terms of the meaning they add to the surnames to which they are added. It can be said that the suffix +lI is a surname-making suffix that is used extensively in surnames. Keywords: Turkish in Lebanon, derivational suffixes, surname suffixes, +lI suffix

Abstract

As an inevitable result of communication between societies, the transition of language elements between the languages of those societies is observed. As the degree of communication increased, as it was between Turkish and Arabic for a period, the exchange of language elements also intensified. In studies on the suffixes that passed from Turkish to other languages, it is seen that the suffixes +CI, +lI, +sIz and +lIk come to the fore. Among these suffixes that passed to other languages, the suffix +lI also draws attention with its unique features.
