Experimental research on acoustic collective surface oscillations based on acoustic metamaterials

In recent years, surface plasmons have garnered significant attention in the field of electromagnetism owing to their valuable applications. However, the study of surface waves within the domain of acoustics is still in its infancy. This paper presents the construction of an acoustic metasurface with embedded resonators and square protrusions on a rigid surface, enabling the excitation of collective surface oscillations caused by low-frequency sound waves—analogous to surface plasmons. Through the development of a testing and verification system, we conducted comparative experiments involving low-frequency sound wave incidence on both the acoustic metasurface and a smooth hard boundary. These experiments successfully verified the existence of acoustic collective surface oscillations. Additionally, finite element simulations demonstrate that these oscillations can be excited not only on planar surfaces but also on curved components, maintaining the same excitation effect. Acoustic collective surface oscillations hold promising potential for applications, akin to surface plasmons. This paper establishes a foundation for applying collective surface oscillations in the field of acoustics.
