Hybrid System and Battery Storage Utilization to Increase Electrification Ratio & Renewable Energy Portion
The Indonesian government has tasked PLN, the state-owned electric power corporation, with achieving 100% electrification nationwide. Despite progress, thirteen regions, particularly mountainous areas, remained below 95% electrification in 2023. Concurrently, Indonesia is committed to reducing its significant GHG emissions. This paper explores the benefits of utilizing photovoltaic (PV) power plants and battery systems, especially in substations, hybrid systems on small islands, and battery swaps in rural areas. PV systems can reduce substation auxiliary power consumption, while hybrid systems can increase the renewable energy share in isolated regions. The TaLis (Tabung Listrik) backup battery facilitates electricity distribution to dispersed households without extensive transmission networks, offering a low-maintenance, rapid-charging solution. These strategies support Indonesia's electrification and emission reduction goals.
