EfficientNetB0-Based Deep Learning Approach for Crop Growth Stage Classification

This paper thoroughly examines the employment of the highly potent EfficientNetB0 convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for image-based growth phase classification of maize crops, aiming to advance precision agriculture by automating key management and monitoring activities. This project seeks to increase agricultural productivity and efficiency through the application of modern deep-learning algorithms. The methodology begins with the preprocessing of a comprehensive dataset of maize crop images. These images are resized to 224x224 pixels to ensure uniformity and standardization across the dataset, which is crucial for the effective training of the CNN. Pixel values are also standardized to optimize the model's preparation phase. Transfer learning is employed, utilizing pre-trained ImageNet weights, which facilitates faster convergence and improves predictive accuracy by leveraging the vast amount of knowledge already embedded in the EfficientNetB0 model. EfficientNetB0 serves as the foundational architecture due to its balanced trade-off between efficiency and accuracy. The model's design includes dropout regularization techniques to mitigate overfitting, which is essential for maintaining generalizability to unseen data. Dense layers are incorporated for hierarchical feature extraction, while global average pooling is used for feature aggregation, reducing the risk of overfitting and maintaining model efficiency. Batch normalization is used to provide consistent learning rates across all layers of the model and to expedite and stabilize the training process. TensorFlow and Keras, powerful deep learning frameworks, are utilized to build and train the model. The classification results demonstrate the model's capability to accurately distinguish between different growth stages of maize crops based solely on images. This accuracy is validated through various benchmarks that assess the model's performance during both the training and validation phases, focusing on metrics such as loss and accuracy. The model's proficiency in accurately predicting maize crop growth stages is further evidenced by its performance on an unseen test set, showcasing its potential for scaling in agricultural monitoring systems. By integrating advanced deep learning techniques, this research contributes significantly to the field of agricultural technology, optimizing production management practices and enhancing yield prediction accuracy. While the primary focus has been on maize, the model shows promise for application to a broader range of crops. Future improvements may include refining the dataset and developing more sophisticated neural networks to achieve even higher accuracy across diverse crops and agricultural environments.
