A Dual-Side-Detuned Series–Series Compensated Inductive Power Transfer System with Plane Misalignment Tolerance

In inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, maintaining a stable output when the coils are significantly misaligned remains a challenge. The design of detuned circuits is considered one of the effective solutions to address this issue. However, in previous studies, commonly used unipolar coils exhibit a rapid decrease in coupling coefficient when misalignment occurs, which limits the system's tolerance to misalignment. To overcome this limitation, this paper establishes a mathematical model of the bilateral detuned series–series (S-S) topology and theoretically analyzes the relationship between the detuning factor and output fluctuations. Based on this, a cascade coil composed of unipolar and quadrupole coils is used to meet the required specifications. This effectively reduces output fluctuations during misalignment. Experimental results indicate that when the <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$X$</tex> and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$Y$</tex> directions are within 50% of the coil size, the system's output fluctuation is only 1.28%.
