A Sampling Method for Radio Environment Map Reconstruction Based on Multiarea Gudmundson Model

Radio environment map (REM) is an important basis for efficient spectrum management in wireless networks. Unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) can effectively detect REM in unfamiliar environments. However, the sampling positions is difficult to be determined due to the complex shadow loss (SL), which affect the accuracy of REM reconstruction. To solve this problem, we propose the multi-area Gudmundson model(MAGM) to describe the SL distribution. Then density based spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN) is improved to divide the samples into areas. Specifically, the difference of SL is used as the distance metric in DBSCAN, and a threshold selection method is designed through the conversion of prior and posterior probability. Subsequently, the uncertainty of SL in MAGM is derived based on Bayesian estimation. At last, a UAV sampling method based on average uncertainty is proposed. The experimental results show that compared to the ordinary Gudmundson model, MAGM can describe the distribution of SL in complex scenarios more accurately, and the calculated uncertainty can effectively reflect the drastic degree of SL changes. Using the proposed sampling method, UAV can spontaneously explore areas with drastic SL changes. The REM reconstruction error is reduced at the same flight distance compared with baseline methods.
