The duty to confront global authoritarianism
There has been a marked rise in authoritarianism globally, with many previous liberal democratic states taking authoritarian terms and global authoritarian powers rising in influence. In light of this shift, this paper delineates a duty to confront global authoritarianism. It argues that this duty is weightier than other emerging duties since a conducive international environment, under threat from global authoritarianism, is necessary for the fulfilment of other global responsibilities. It goes on to argue that states should eschew the use of illiberal means to tackle global authoritarianism, even if they are superficially attractive.
