Performance of a Cylinder and a Flat Plate Bearing Lubricated with Ferrofluid under the Combined Influence of Couple Stress and Inertia Forces: Shliomis Model
The combined influence of the couple stress and inertial forces on the performance of a long cylinder and a flat plate that are separated by ferrofluid has been theoretically investigated in this paper. Owing to the development of modern machines, applications of ferrofluids have received considerable attention. We motivate a study of Couplestress on ferrofluid lubrication between a cylinder and a flat plate squeezing mechanism because it is essential for minimizing friction, wear, and heat in mechanical systems like bearings and rollers. Taking into account the Stokes couple stress fluid model, the mean inertia principle, and the Shliomis ferro-hydrodynamic model, we derived Reynolds' equation, including the couple stress effects, for the study of squeeze film performance. We have obtained the expressions for pressure distribution, load-carrying capacity, and squeeze film time. According to the obtained and discussed results, the combined influences of couplestress and inertia result in an enhanced load and a longer squeeze film time for the ferrofluid-lubricated cylinder-flat plate system. Higher values of the Langevin parameter and volume concentration, along with smaller values of film height, further enhance this effect.
