Relationship Between Analysis Position of Mandibular Cortical Bone and Mandibular Cortical Morphology for Osteoporosis Screening Using Panoramic Radiography

ABSTRACT Aim This study evaluated the relationship between mandibular cortical bone position and mandibular morphology using an artificial intelligence–based computer‐aided diagnosis system for panoramic radiography. Methods Sixty‐two patients who underwent panoramic radiography were enrolled. Mandibular morphometric indices, including the mandibular cortical index and the degree of deformation, were calculated using artificial intelligence–based computer‐aided diagnosis. These indices were used as screening tools for osteoporosis. Measurements were taken at three locations: right below the mental foramen, 10 mm mesial to this position, and 10 mm distal to it. The indices at these locations were compared. Results At the mesial position, the mandibular cortical bone thickness increased from 2.62 ± 0.34 mm to 2.93 ± 0.59 mm, indicating a lower risk of osteoporosis. In contrast, at the distal position, the mandibular cortical bone thickness decreased from 3.92 ± 0.39 mm to 3.40 ± 0.47 mm, suggesting a higher risk of osteoporosis. Conclusion Misalignment of the mandibular cortical bone measurement position can affect analysis results. Therefore, careful verification of the measurement location is essential to ensure accurate assessments.
