Early Buryat Glossaries 1.1

Abstract This study examines two 18th-century Buryat glossaries, exploring the connections between the works of Regnier (1769) and Tatarinov (1765). These glossaries offer valuable insights into the historical phonology, lexicon, and dialectology of the Buryat language. The research identifies significant phonetic changes and orthographic features, revealing the influence of transcription systems and external linguistic factors, including Cyrillic and German orthographic conventions. By analyzing these glossaries, the study traces the chronological progression of phonological changes in Buryat, highlighting their significance for broader research in Mongolic historical linguistics. This work provides a foundation for future comparative studies of early Buryat linguistic records, deepening our understanding of the language’s historical development.
