New Functional Inequalities with Applications to the Arctan-Fast Diffusion Equation

Abstract In this paper, we prove a couple of new nonlinear functional inequalities of Sobolev type akin to the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. In particular, one of the inequalities reads $$\int _{{{\mathbb {S}}^1}}\arctan \left( \frac{\partial _x u}{u} \right) \partial _xu \,\textrm{d}x\geqslant \arctan \left( \left\| u \right\| _{\dot{W}^{1,1}({{\mathbb {S}}^1})} \right) \left\| u \right\| _{\dot{W}^{1,1}({{\mathbb {S}}^1})}.$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mo>∫</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>S</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:msup> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>arctan</mml:mo> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>∂</mml:mi> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mfrac> </mml:mfenced> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>∂</mml:mi> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> <mml:mspace/> <mml:mtext>d</mml:mtext> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mo>⩾</mml:mo> <mml:mo>arctan</mml:mo> <mml:mfenced> <mml:msub> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mfenced> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mover> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>˙</mml:mo> </mml:mover> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>S</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> </mml:mfenced> <mml:msub> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mfenced> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mover> <mml:mi>W</mml:mi> <mml:mo>˙</mml:mo> </mml:mover> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>S</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>.</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> Then, these inequalities are used in the study of the nonlinear arctan -fast diffusion equation $$ \partial _tu-\partial _x\arctan \left( \frac{\partial _xu}{u}\right) =0.$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>∂</mml:mi> <mml:mi>t</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>∂</mml:mi> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>arctan</mml:mo> <mml:mfenced> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>∂</mml:mi> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mi>u</mml:mi> </mml:mfrac> </mml:mfenced> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> <mml:mo>.</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> For this highly nonlinear PDE, we establish a number of well-posedness results and qualitative properties.
