Unravelling the Nexus: A Comparative Analysis of Diabetes Mellitus and Its Impact on Respiratory Infection Susceptibility and Outcomes
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global health crisis that not only affectsblood glucose regulation but also significantly impacts various organsand body systems, including immune function. One of the mostconcerning complications of DM is an increased susceptibility toinfections, particularly respiratory infections. These infections, rangingfrom pneumonia to viral respiratory infections such as influenza andtuberculosis (TB), and fungal infections like aspergillosis, tend to be moresevere in diabetic individuals, leading to prolonged illness, increasedhospitalisation, and mortality. This article provides a comparativeanalysis of the mechanisms through which diabetes impacts respiratoryinfection susceptibility, explores the types of respiratory infectionsthat are most common in diabetic patients and offers an in-depthlook at the clinical consequences of these infections. Furthermore, wediscuss innovative approaches to managing and preventing respiratoryinfections in individuals with diabetes, including novel vaccines, precisionmedicine, and integrated care models.
