Cognitive Approaches to Understanding Phraseological units in English Summary Phraseological units in English, including idioms, collocations and fixed expressions, have long been considered complex and often difficult for language learners to understand. Traditional linguistic approaches have viewed these expressions as arbitrary combinations of words with meanings that must be learned separately. However, Cognitive Linguistics offers a new perspective by emphasizing the relationship between language and human cognition. Cognitive theories, particularly Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Conceptual Blending and Embodied Cognition, offer valuable insights into how phraseological units reflect mental processes, cultural experiences and physical interactions with the world. Key words: phraseological units, cognitive, idioms, linguistics, cross-cultural linguistics
