Evaluation of Winter Squash Cultivars for Resistance to Whitefly-Transmitted Viruses in Georgia, 2023
Cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV), cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV), and cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus (CCYV) are the predominant whitefly-transmitted viruses (WTVs) that occur as mixed infections in cucurbit crops in southern Georgia. Mixed infection symptoms include leaves curling, crumpling, yellowing, and plant stunting. This study evaluated 10 commercial hybrid winter squash cultivars for resistance to WTVs in open field under natural virus disease pressure at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus during the fall season of 2023. This study found no complete resistance to WTVs among cultivars but identified variations in their tolerance levels and fruit yield performance.
