Electrically Controlled Ignition Performance of LiClO4/PVA/H2O Propellants

Electrically controlled solid propellants (ECSPs), which can undergo multiple ignitions and allow for burning rate regulation, provide a new route for achieving repeated startups and a wide range of thrust operations of propulsion systems. Lithium perchlorate (LP)/polyvinyl alcohol [Formula: see text] composites have been prepared via the solution casting method. The effects of its microstructure on conductivity and ion migration of the [Formula: see text] ECSPs have been investigated using x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopies. Their electrochemical properties were analyzed using alternating current impedance. It indicates that the presence of [Formula: see text] may improve ion conduction of the ECSPs, with a maximum value of [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the ignition experiments of these composites were carried out under high voltages to explore the effect of LP content, voltage, and ignition times on the ignition delay and energy requirements. The results indicate that increasing conductivity, voltage, and ignition times significantly reduces ignition delay. Moreover, the conductivity is closely related to the LP content in the composites. Based on the above results, the mechanisms of ion migration, electrolysis, thermal decomposition, and ignition are proposed. These mechanisms offer valuable insights into the fundamental processes governing the behavior of ECSPs during ignition and combustion.
