Optimization study on the collection efficiency of the channel electron multiplier in a UV photoelectron spectroscopy analyzer

In UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) analyzers, the channel electron multiplier (CEM) effectively collects and amplifies photoelectrons emitted from material surfaces. The collection efficiency (CE) of the CEM has a significant impact on the accuracy of photoelectron quantification. In this paper, a new focusing system design for the CEM was proposed to achieve high CE. The effects of various operational and geometric parameters of the CEM and the subsidiary focusing system were comprehensively investigated using the finite integration technique, the Monte Carlo method, and the orthogonal experiment. Simulation results indicated that the CE of the optimized system achieved 99.8%.
