A Rare Case of Avulsion of Furcate Cord Insertion During Delivery and Subsequent Fetal Hemorrhage
Furcate cord insertion is a rare abnormality that is characterized by the branching of the umbilical vessels without protective Wharton's jelly prior to insertion on the placenta. Most cases are prenatally undiagnosed and still have favorable outcomes, but injury to the unprotected fetal vessels can occasionally lead to complications, such as vessel rupture and fetal demise. We present a case of spontaneous cord avulsion of a furcate insertion during delivery, which consequently led to fetal hemorrhage that required neonatal resuscitation and transfusion. Our case highlights the need for increased documentation and awareness of this condition to better inform patients of potential risks.
