Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in the Modern NICU: Integrating Evidence-Based Therapies into Practice
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) happens when the normal drop in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) after birth doesn't occur properly, leading to a failure in circulatory transition. In the womb, the fetus naturally exists in a state of high pulmonary pressure. Oxygenated blood is delivered via the placenta through the umbilical vein.
