Effect of infusion therapy volume on the first day after gastropancreatoduodenal resection on immediate outcomes

Objective. To evaluate the effect of intravenous infusion volume on the first day after gastropancreatoduodenal resection (GPDR) on postoperative outcomes in cancer patients. Material and methods. The study retrospectively included 70 patients who underwent GPDR for pancreatic and periampular cancer in 2023. Results. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=35) received intravenous infusion volume ≥6.500 ml on the first postoperative day, group 2 (n=35) received infusion volume <6.500 ml. The complication rate was 45.7% (n=16) and 57.1% (n=20) (p=0.352), 90-day postoperative mortality — 2.8% (n=1) and 8.5% (n=3) (p=0.364), duration of hospital-stay — 17 (14—22) and 18 (14—30) days (p=0.441), respectively. Correlation analysis revealed uniform distribution of incidence and severity of postoperative complications. Negative Pearson coefficient (r=–0.133) suggests similar complication rate in both groups. Conclusion. The median daily intravenous infusion was 6.500 ml. There were no significant between-group differences in the incidence and severity of postoperative complications, 90-day mortality and length of hospital-stay. Daily infusion therapy >6.500 ml does no increase in the risk of mortality and postoperative complications. Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between various indicators.
